Well, I just checked and I've been a member of this site for 35 weeks now, and haven't introduced myself or posted anything.
So maybe it's about time. I've been knitting on and of (and on and off and on and off) for something like 35 or 40 years. Mostly on during those times I've quit smoking and needed something to keep my hands busy.
I'm self-taught, like I'm sure a lot of us are. I started small with mittens and booties (my sister seemed always to be pregnant at that time), and eventually worked my way up to bigger pieces. I remember my first sweater: it was a "Great Gatsby" inspired cardigan. At the time, I pretty much disregarded any of the instructions or things like "checking the gauge", and the piece was much less than a wearable masterpiece.
However, once I started taking the art more seriously, I produced a lot of different pieces, some of which I managed to make on consignment for a little knit shop north of Chicago. Most of my others turned out to be gifts for friends and relatives. I never made many sweaters for myself. In fact, I have only two: a fisherman sweater in a sort of hunter green heather/tweed; a reindeer sweater from a pattern I found in a German knitting magazine.
Now, though, I tend to knit and design much larger pieces. Lately I've been doing blankets and throws to commemorate all the dogs and cats I've known and loved (and really miss, now) throughout my life. I'd like to figure out a way to market them.
I really miss the social aspect of knitting. Just hanging around a shop, even if I was that anomaly of the only male knitter in the bunch. It's nice to know there are so many of us out there.
Well, that's about it. I'm going to post a few pics of some of my recent larger works.
Would enjoy hearing from any of you.
