A few weeks ago, Shawn (HuskerClub) commented on a request for a stretchy cast on. He described a cast on that I had never heard of before. This morning, being in an investigative mood, I did a little experiment. I used 2.25 mm needles and some sock yarn. I cast on 20 stitches with long tail cast on, k2p2 for about an inch and stretched it out. It stretched to about 3 inches. I cast on the same way but with two needles and got almost exactly the same result. I then cast on 20 stitches using the German Twisted cast on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfFadEumBak and got a stretch of 4 1/4 inches. I found a video demonstration of the method that Shawn described http://www.rosemaryknits2.blogspot.com/2006/11/best-stretchy-cast-on-ever.html
and cast on 20 stitches and when I had ribbed for about an inch I stretched it out and it made an amazing 5 1/2 inches. Yikes!! All of the cast on's looked neat except for the regular long tail using two needles. It had a sloppy looking edge and didn't stretch much more than the same cast on with one needle.
I would be interested learning of your experiences. Have many of you have used the Shawn cast on or have even heard of it? OR would you say as some of my students might, "A mi, no importa."
