Pattern help needed

Aaronknits's picture

I'm still plugging away at the Leo's sweater pattern from knitty.com.  It's taken me quite some time to get as far as I have.  Not only am I a slow knitter, and don't have time to knit every day, but I have been taking breaks from it to work on smaller things too.  I'm also taking my time with this project because it's not for me and I want it to be as close to perfect as possible.

Anyway, I have a question regarding the pattern instructions that I'm hoping you good gents might be able to shed some light on and provide some guidance.  I am at the point of the neck shaping on the front piece.  Here's the text of the pattern with the lines highlighted where I have some confusion:
Armhole Shaping
BO 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of foll 2 rows. 113[129, 137, 153, 161] sts
Working dec rows as per Shaping Note above, dec 1 st at each end of next 1[4, 6, 7, 9] rows. 111[121, 125, 139, 143] sts
Cont in rib patt until piece measures 6[6.5, 6.5, 6.5, 7] inches from beg of armhole shaping, ending with a RS row.

Neck shaping
Next Row [WS]: Work across 46[51, 52, 59, 60] sts, BO center 19[19, 21, 21, 23] sts, work rem 46[51, 52, 59, 60] sts
Right side
Next Row [RS]: Work in patt as set to last 5 sts, k2 tog, k3.
Next Row [WS]: P3, p2tog, work in patt as set to end.
Work these 2 rows 9[10, 10, 11, 11] times more, then work first row 0[0, 0, 1, 1] time more. 26[29, 30, 34, 45] sts
Work even until piece measures 9[9.5, 10, 10.5, 11] inches from beg of armhole shaping, ending with a WS row.
Next row [RS]: BO 6[7, 7, 8, 8] sts, work to end.
Next and all foll WS rows: Work even in patt as set.
Next row [RS]: BO 6[7, 7, 8, 9] sts, work to end.
Next row [RS]: BO 7[7, 8, 9, 9] sts, work to end.
Next row [RS]: BO rem 7[8, 8, 9, 9] sts in patt.
Reattach yarn and work left neck and shoulder to match right neck and shoulder, reversing all shaping, using k2tog tbl and p2tog tbl decs in place of k2tog and p2tog.

Now, what's got me a bit confused is the first line of the neck shaping and the instructions after that.  I've worked the first 51 sts of the WS row, bound off the center 19 sts and worked the remaining 51 sts, but that leaves my yarn at the left shoulder (it's on the right hand side when I turn the work with the RS of the fabric is facing me though).  Basically the pattern suggests that the next row is on the opposite shoulder from where my yarn ended up after completing the previous row. I'm thinking that I will actually be attaching a new ball on the right shoulder and working those pattern instructions that follow, and then picking up the remainder of the ball that's still attached to the left shoulder and continuing with those instructions.  Am I thinking too hard, or am I totally having a brain-fart and missing something completely obvious?

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.  Thanks!!

 Aaron

Are you confusing the right

Are you confusing the right and wrong side of the work (that is, the knit and the purl side) with the right and LEFT half of the sweater?  You should now be working only on the right half of the sweater.

Nope, the right and wrong

Nope, the right and wrong side of the fabric are pretty clear.  It's the continuation of the instruction for which shoulder that WS row ends on that isn't.

If I'm following correctly,

If I'm following correctly, you are working on the front section ending at the left shoulder after binding off for the neck on the WS.  You would then turn the piece and work back and forth on the left neck and shoulder, starting on the RS and making decreases at the inside (neck) edge.

I think there is an error in the later instruction reading "Reattach yarn and work left neck and shoulder to match right neck and shoulder ..."  It seems to me that you already worked the left neck and shoulder and would then need to work on the right.

I prefer to attach a second ball of yarn at the neck on the first RS row and work both shoulders at the same time, reversing the shaping as described.  I find it easier that way to keep track of what I'm doing and make the two sides identical.

Hope this helps.  I like the sweater, and in fact have previously bookmarked the pattern thinking I'll make one myself someday.

That's basically how I was

That's basically how I was reading it too.  I do plan to work both shoulders simultaneously as was also suggested by Lars below.

Now I know I must be seeing

Now I know I must be seeing things.  I could swear I read a similar suggestion about working both at the same time in your post too.  I really need a vacation!!!
