The local Emergency Department that I work in is hosting the "Kelly Murphy Memorial Hat/Scarf/Mitten Tree" this upcoming Holiday season.
Kelly Murphy was a nurse in our emergency room and an avid knitter and crocheter. A few years ago, Kelly went home after a 12-hour shift where she died suddenly from a ruptured anyurism. To honor her memory, the ER had been erecting a holiday tree each year and decorating it with hats, gloves and scarves for the less fortunate to take as needed. Due to the population growth in our area and the apparent influx of the medically indigent utilizing the Emergency Room as their primary medical provider, we are putting forth a big effort this year to keep the tree stocked... especially after the winter we had last year!
We are hosting weekly KTog's at local bookstores and at the hospital... providing free knitting & crochet lessons and free yarn to anyone who wants to learn in support of the project... and we even have a few of the LYS involved!
If any of you are looking for a charity outlet to contribute some of your knit or crochet hats, scarves or mittens... please consider the Kelly Murphy Tree.
