## Cat Hat

Hello everyone out there in blog-land,

As my profile says, I’m still fairly new to knitting but I thought I would post a picture of my most recently completed project. It’s a cat hat for a friend's baby who is expected to be born any day now! I handed over the gift this afternoon and was pleased and surprised with my friend’s positive response.

I got the pattern from a book I found at our local library but the math seemed off to me. They told me that starting with 72 sts, *K6, SKP; rep from * to end – 63 sts. I followed this and ended up with leftover sts at the end of the row so I backstitched and tried again (twice). This caused me to look at their math and as I saw it, 72 sts to start minus the end result of 63 sts, means 9 decreases per row. 72 sts
9 decreases per row = decrease once in every group of 8. Therefore, *K7, SKP (7 + the resulting SKP = 8 in a group); rep from * to end. This left me with exactly 63 sts when I completed the row. I did each decrease row the same way. Maybe I shouldn’t have done this but nonetheless, the hole closed up and created a hat. Woo-hoo!

I’d appreciate any comments but please be gentle as I bruise easily… Now back to continuing with my cable-knit throw. Oy I had no idea how unruly this throw would become. A 25 ball project, what was I thinking? But it’s kind of nice to work on during the cold, damp, rainy days we’ve had this summer.

Take care,

Chris

### OK, first, the hat is super

OK, first, the hat is super cute and the baby will get lots of "awww"s everytime he or she wears it.

As for printed intructions - pish! What makes you think a knitting pattern writer can do math any better than you. Believe me, we've all been there, convinced that we were unable to knit as we can not make the pattern work. You made it work which makes you an accomplished knitter! The publishers of the patterns are generally receptive and pleased to know when there is a mistake (mathematical, printing, or other) in their published patterns so they can be corrected in subsequent editions. If it's a current book, they might even post it on a website with credit to you - then you'll come up as one of those knitting gurus who catches things that make patterns work for millions!

Good job!

### I need to make a couple of

I need to make a couple of those. It's adorable! I'm on vacation for a few days next week so I guess a trip to the library is in order. If I don't find that hat specifically, perhaps something else will catch my eye. Any chance you remember the name or author of the book?

### I'm always impressed by

I'm always impressed by people who manage to make and give birthing presents before the birth. I still owe several of my nieces and nephews their birth girfts - and the youngest is now 19!

The cat is simply adorable - I'm sure they will treasure it.

The hat is adorable! Great job! And don't fret over re-writing the pattern to get the results you want. Mistakes in printed patterns happen all the time. It's unfortunate that you discovered it, but fortunate that you have the knowledge and experience to be able to work around it. Congratulations!
