My first Niebling

TomH's picture

Here's an in-progress photo of my first Niebling, "Lotus Flower". I have to say it's the most complicated pattern I've knit to date. It's going fine, just real slowly. It's a doily pattern but I'm knitting it using KnitPicks' Options US #8 (5 mm) needle and JaggerSpun Maine Line 2/8 yarn in Cinnabar color. I'm on round 73 of 155 rounds and currently have 660 stitches on the 60" needle. Sorry you can't see the evolving pattern better but the needle is a bit full of stitches right now.

thanks for posting such a detailed pic. most of the lace i've been finding online has been zoomed out a lot -- nice for seeing the whole pattern, but i really enjoy being able to see more of the individual stitches.
keep up the good work.

Tom does incredible work - and his photos seem to always show just what you want to see in the pattern.

Tom - It's looking great. Is your chart one of the Burda type? - where white boxes mean no stitch, and are there only for aligning the chart? That confused me for a bit, but I've gotten used to it now.

Hex mesh - after doing it a gazillion times it becomes a sort of silly mantra game. I say to myelf 'k2tog-zoop-zoop-skp #' for each unit, then on the in between rounds, I check accuracy, counting 1,2,3-purl-5-6-7-purl-9-10...(or whatever the location of the purl count comes out at). The little mental exercise keeps it from being too bad, and even a bit euphoric when you get to the end without a mistake!

Looking forward to the FO pics

Yes, the charts are Burda

Yes, the charts are Burda type with the white squares mean no stitch. I laughed when I read your comments because I also use a silly mantra when doing the mesh stitches. I break each of the pattern repeats (which are right now 110 stitches each) into little, mini sections with stitch markers and count and count, then go back and count when I've finished each repeat so I am sure to maintain the correct amount of stitches. I think that's why it's taking so long to knit. But screwing up the pattern woiuld make me crazy. Better to rip as I go rather than have to tink back a row or more.

wow. very nice. glad you

wow. very nice.
glad you mentioned the "hex mesh". i've seen it but never known what it was called to look up a pattern

Mario, as you might guess,

Mario, as you might guess, the Hex mesh is tedious. In fact the whole knitting is going very slowly since it's only the second pattern I've knit from a chart. Someday I'll get around to posting the last shawl I knit ("Summer Into Fall" by GoddessKnits) - which was my first "chart" project. Of course, I haven't blocked that yet, either. As well as the learning curve of reading a Niebling chart, I also have the learning curve of needing to read a right side chart and a left side chart for each pattern repeat. But I have to believe it's going to be beautiful when it's done. And ... I have to remind myself I'm not trying to win any races.

It's going to be gorgeous,

It's going to be gorgeous, Tom! Even if Niebling got the shape of the lotus leaf all wrong, the flowers are right....*grin*

How are you enjoying the "dreaded Hex mesh"?
