...but... can someone translate this pattern for me?

"Bind off 6(6-7-8-9) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 70(78-86-92-100) sts. Dec 1 st each side every RS row 8(10-11-12-14) times – 54(58-64-68-72) sts. Work even until armholes measure 8 1/2(9-9-9 1/2-10)”, end on WS."

does this mean, i bind off 6 stitches one after another.
then do that again.
THEN i knit two stitches together at the end of same row 8 times.
THEN ?? ...do i continue knitting two stitches together at that end until it measures 8"?
i have no idea of what 'work even' means even after googling it and reading glossarys.

HELP HELP HELP!

I would add the comment that

I would add the comment that how you want to think of this is that you are trying to make each side of your garment look identical. Whatever you are doing to one side you are doing to the other. For decreases, you do it on each side on the SAME row. For binding off (since you can only do this at the beginning of the row), you do it on one row and then the very next row. I don't know if I've made matters better or worse, but hopefully better.

Agreed.

You have understood most of

You have understood most of it correctly. You do indeed bind off 6 stitches one after the other at the beginning of the next two rows. Then you knit 2 together at each end of every RIGHT side row 8 times.

'Work even' means that once you have got to 54 stitches with your decreasing you knit on these 54 stitches without any other shaping until the armhole measures 8-1/2 inches from the 6 bind off stitches to the needle.

Hope this makes more sense.
