Chart Help

crmartin's picture

This is my first lace project and I am having trouble with the pattern/chart. It appears to me that the chart does not match the written instructions.

The pattern is here:
http://allbuttonedup.wordpress.com/2007/07/06/strangling-vine-raok-pattern-1/

I am using the written directions and it seems to be coming out ok but I am confused.

Could one of you lace geniuses check the pattern and advise me.

Thanks,
Randy

Thanks for the help. My

Thanks for the help.

My interpretation of the chart is:

Row 1 the chart matches the written instructions between the repeats except the key is wrong (slip, slip, K & K2tog are reversed).
Row 3 is correct if you read left to right. This is the way I am working the pattern and it looks like the picture.

I was somewhat worried as this is my first chart experience and thought if I was that confused with such a simple pattern I would never survive a more complicated one.

The chart does *NOT* match

The chart does *NOT* match the written directions, but is correct, as far as it goes. What it doesn't show is that on row one you start with k1 before the repeats and end with a k2; and on row 3 you start with k2 before the repeats and end with k1. This balances out the lace design. The design is actually an 8 +1 repeat they are having you knit as a 8 plus 3.

I'd question the "correct,

I'd question the "correct, as far as it goes" part too.
Unless I'm seeing my slashes wrong, per the chart, the order of the decreases is K2tog then SSK on rows 1 and 3 which is the opposite of what's in the written directions.
Yes, I know that technically the slants may be correct (ie a K2tog is a right slanting decrease and therefore is usually labelled with a " / ") but my point is the KEY is wrong.
Or do I need to get my glasses checked?

Well, you almost caused me

Well, you almost caused me to throw a fit LOL. As a devout chart knitter I thought I was going to have to get on my oh so well used/abused soap box and begin "talking" about the wounder of charts vs the awfulness of words. However, given the fact that this chart is not great and the pattern is so simple it is really a moot point...you are all veeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrry lucky LOL. This chart only shows the repeat and as Kerry stated the edge sts are not there, as well as the other sts outside of the *'s.

OK, so I didn't read the words, just saw the k1 before the * and caught and error right off so didn't investigate farther. BAD KNITTER! slapping myself since I don't have anyone here to do it for me LOL.

The only thing I can see

The only thing I can see about the chart is that it doesn't have the K3 edging. Hope that helps.
