In a pinch - Use a drill bit gauge

purlyman's picture

I was working out in the garage today and came across my drill gauge. I thought to myself, "Now that looks exactly like my knitting needle gauge." So I got my needles out and tested the gauges. Although the measurements of the holes are not exact (I would probably never use this chart myself since I have a couple needle gauges), one could use the following conversion chart if need be:

Needle Size : Drill Bit Gauge

Size 1 : 3/32
Size 2 : 7/64
Size 3 : 9/64
Size 4 : (don't have size 4s)
Size 5 : 5/32
Size 6 : 11/64
Size 7 : 3/16
Size 8 : 13/64
Size 9 : 13/64 (tight fit) or 7/32
Size 10 : 7/32
Size 10.5 : 1/4
Size 11 : 5/16
Size 13 : 23/64
Size 15 : 25/64

I've used this

I've used this correspondence to make size 11 double pointed needles from 5/16" hardwood dowels. Dowels are cheaper than knitting needles.

I thought it might be

I thought it might be interesting to find someplace that sold metric drill bit gauges cheaply.

What a great gift that would have been for guy-knitter friends.

Unfortunately even the cheap ones seem to go for over $20. Oh well...still love the idea.

You said it!! Both my drill bit gauge and knitting needles gauge have metric measurements though. None of the holes are exactly the same according to those. But... like I said... in case of emergency.

I'm trying to get in touch with my male side. But I only have backwood hicks as roll models, it's not working out so great for me :( Can't go back to the bar again either. Ever.
