Simple is always good,

Simple is always good, especially when you already have pattern in your yarn. If you had a solid colour yarn, then you could use pattern in your stitches. It's usually not a good idea to mix the two -- as seen in your ribbing -- the pattern doesn't show itself as well.

I agree and normally I wouldn't have ribbed a variegated yarn, but I actually wanted it to look that way so the folded up bit would look different from the body of the hat. Kind of a contrasting section without changing yarn.

It may be "nothing fancy," but I still think it turned out fantastic!

I love how that bold dark brown stripe stands out among all the more varied sections.
