Whats a good Stitch Dictionary?

trybat's picture

Hey guys, I am thinking about getting a Stitch Dictionary and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or has any that they really like and find useful :)

Any info will be greatly appreciated, even if it is a warning to stay far far away from a certain book!

Thanks for the help,

Paul :)

You can check out

You can check out www.joincrafterschoice.com. It is a book club that has some stitch guides. I just received literature in the mail this morning and joined. I ordered "A-Z Of Knitting" and "Super Stitches Knitting", I also ordered the two "One-Skein Wonders" books. The promotion lets you pick 4 books at $1.00 each plus shipping and you have to buy one more book in the next year. I also ordered an extra book ("Men Who Knit & The Dogs Who Love Them") and the total bill came to $29.36. I'm looking forward to receiving them.

Paul, Sticky Warp is right

Paul,

Sticky Warp is right on - Barbara Walker is the way to go. TO be honest, every single other stitch dictionary looks like a Reader's Digest abridged version of Barbara Walker's work. Certainly some are more colorful, and most are more portable, but Walker's work is incredibly comprehensive. Not only does she provide directions and pictures for 100's of patterns, she will also often give a historical note if appropriate - note for example her notes on the Dura-Europas Patterns: "The city of Dura-Europas, on the bank of the Euphrates River in Syria, was founded in 300 BC and fell in 256 AD...." She goes on to explain how the textiles were found by the archeological teams - very cool stuff.

Barbara Walker herself is very interesting - she's also the author of The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets and The Skeptical Feminist.

Stickywarp is right. The

Stickywarp is right. The Barbara Walker Treasuries are wonderful. I found Volumes 2, 3 and 4 at the public library. My current budget doesn't allow for purchasing them. Is it too late to hope for a secret santa? Of, the three, Volume 3 is my favorite since it has the most lace stitches. If I recall correctly, Volume 2 has a lot of stitch patterns for multicolor knitting so it would be perfect for all you guys who are currently working with color strand knitting.

Barbara Walker's Treasury of Knitting Patterns. They are the Bibles of all things knitted.

2nd volume: ISBN# 0942018176
3rd volume: ISBN# 0942018184

They run about 30 clams apiece.

All are available from Schoolhouse Press or from Amazon. You're public library p'rolly will also have them; they'll be cataloged as 746.43 WALKER.

I second Barbara Walker! Treasury 1 is excellent and worth the $30 in my opinion.

Check out "365 Knitting

Check out "365 Knitting Stitches A Year Perpetual Calendar". You can find it on Amazon. I have it though I have not yet used it. It has the stitch formulas, one for each day of the year, as well as a nice color picture of the resulting fabric for each stitich.
