Slightly Beyond Basic - The "Easy Peasy" Shawl

MMario's picture

seems like this disappeared again - leastwise I can't find it on my blog. So posting it again.

I called this 'Slightly Beyond Basic' but it got Christened the 'Easy Peasy' Shawl by someone knitting it.

cast on 8, join, knit around.
unnumbered rows are knit

1) YO, k1 (16 stitches)
5) YO, k1 (32 stitches)
9) YO, k2tog (16 times)
13) YO, k1 (64 stitches)
17) YO, k2tog (32 times)
21) yo, K2
25) yo, K1, K2TOG
29) YO, k3
33) YO, k2, k2tog
37) YO, k4

from here, the pattern is
a) knit 3 rows
b) pattern row:
YO, knit x stitches (increments one each time), k2tog
c) knit 3 rows
d) increase row, YO, knit x +2 stitches

so the next set of rows would be:

41) YO, k3, k2tog
45) YO, k5
and the set after that:

49) YO, k4, k2tog
53) YO, k6

easy peasy, yes?

continue until "big enough" .

Cast off row:
knit 1, * return stitch to left needle, knit, return to left needle, k2tog; repeat from *

VARIATION:
want a slightly more open shawl with a tighter spiral?

then starting with row 22 your 8 row repeat becomes:

A) knit a row
B) YO, knit x stitches, k2tog (32 segments)

Repeat A & B twice more for a total of 6 rows

C) knit a row
D) YO, knit x +2 stitches (32 segments)

increase 'x' by 1 and start over at 'A'

Two more VARIATIONS with 64 'rays' in the spiral:

For row 21, (YO, k1) around.

the 16 row repeat becomes:

A) knit a row
B) YO, knit x stitches, k2tog (64 segments)

repeat these two rows six times more (14 rows total)

C) knit a row
D) YO, knit x +2 stitches (64 segments)

increase 'x' by 1 (the first time through x=0)

Or -

A) knit 3 rows
B) YO, knit x stitches, k2tog (64 segments)

repeat these two rows twice more (12 rows total)

C) knit 3 rows
D) YO, knit x +2 stitches (64 segments)

increase x by 1 and start 16 row repeat again

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

there is a petaled variation but I didn't come up with it.

I finished a bably blanket

I finished a bably blanket done to this pattern on Sept 1 - but forgot to take a picture - I've e-mailed the baby's mom for a photo though.

Check back through

Check back through Stickywarp's posts - he's the one that came up with the variation with petals. he *still* hasn't posted a picture yet, though.
MMario - Can anybody tell me what year it is?

Do wish he'd post a picture

Do wish he'd post a picture of his - because I started one today - and a lot of ideas are percolating - just what I need ; more ideas of things to knit. but I'm up to 128 stitches around, onto the circular needle and going great guns - hope I don't end up oosting a picture first!
