Trying my first sock.

MasonM's picture

I'm attempting my first sock. It's been an interesting challenge as it's my first attempt to use double points. After a very awkward start it's coming along ok. I'm following Silver's Sock Class.

To make it a little easier for a first attempt I'm using worsted weight yarn on size 6 DPNs. I'm saving the sport weight cotton yarn for a "good" pair of socks once I get the technique down. Right now I have a roughly 2.5 inch long ribbed tube which will eventually be the 5 inch top of the sock. If nothing else this heavier wool should make a decent house sock.

Today I placed an order for Knit Picks Options circular needles kit as well as the pumpkin orange Eagle knitting tote. With the express shipping they should be here Monday or Tuesday. I'm looking forward to trying out the Options.

Ah well, back to the sock. If it doesn't come out too horribly I'll post a pic once it's finished.

You realize you are doomed

You realize you are doomed to be an avid sock knitter? They are addictive and you will wind up loving them! Once you get the socks on DPNs under your belt you'll want to try socks on circulars, or my favorite socks on magic loop, then there are toe-up socks. Yes you will start hoarding sock yarn, because buying a ball of sock yarn isn't like buying yarn, it's only one little ball.

The biggest surprise though is that I currently don't have a pair of socks on needles. Shocking, I know.

I had to laugh when I read

I had to laugh when I read this. I just ordered a set of Knit Picks Options today and can't wait to get my hands on them.

I'm really looking forward to trying the magic loop method.

You'll love the socks....I make worsted weight socks with a short top on size 8 needles and present them to friends and relatives who complain of cold feet at night........I call them bedsocks!

I'm looking forward to wearing a pair of socks that I actually made regardless of how ugly they may be.

That's the same strategy I

That's the same strategy I used for my first sock trial. I started with worsted weight yarn on size 6 dpns. The worsted weight socks are great around the house, and/or worn with birkenstocks. (True story, I'm that much of a geek; I wear socks with my birkenstocks.)
