Insane Knitting - 2007

MMario's picture

while most of my friends are already quite willing to tell you I am insane - I'm afraid this project will prove them right.

I've cast on for Eunny Jang's Bayerische Socks - done toe-up as kilt hose.

Wish me luck! I have a feeling I'm going to need it.

In addition to the twisted rib, cables, etc, I'm converting the pattern to toe-up, converting it to kilt hose, and changing the size.

AND - (and this may be the worst part) if I am successful - the intent is to wear the hose with a kilt. I scored enough black watch tartan in an auction last fall to make a great kilt.

The needles are small enough

The needles are small enough and the yarn fine enough and the cables require concentration - so needless to say, progress on these is not occuring at lightning speed; especially since I can only work on them when my eyes are *not* tired - something that 9 hours a day of computer work doesn't help.

But I have started the pattern on sock #1; and cast on the toe for sock #2. The idea is to catch #2 up with #1 then alternate work on the two. Maybe I'll take them to florida the end of Feb and work on them that weekend.

I spent so long in the Folk

I spent so long in the Folk Museum in Innsbruck photographing dozens of these socks that the Curator came along - she'd been watching on CCTV - and asked me what I doing. I think I managed to explain my passion for twisted stitch socks but I still think she thought I was potty! I love these patterns. Remember to check out the museum if you're ever in Austria. It was fantastic. Loads of knitting and loads of these socks!

You are a mad man!!! I

You are a mad man!!! I can't wait to see your progress.

"A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?" Though I doubt that this exceeds your grasp.
For what it's worth from a "woman of a certain age", men in kilts are decidedly hot.

Men who are 140 lbs or so overweight should be careful what they wear.

I'm not sure "baravery" is

I'm not sure "baravery" is the correct attribute when talking about trying these....

I think I will wait on those

I think I will wait on those socks until I at least know how to purl. Maybe my 3rd or 4th project huh. :-)

But think of the learning

But think of the learning experience, purls, circular knitting, twisted ribs, cables, and turning a heel, all in one project!

I had to redo my top down

I had to redo my top down pattern..because the firt time I didn't allow enough extra stitches for the cables shrinkage...
Good Luck.

Mario, I am so not worried

Mario,

I am so not worried about you. You'll kvetch and whine, and it will be gorgeous.... What color will you do them in?

Not tonight honey: I'm knitting...

I'm useing knitpicks 'BARE'

I'm useing knitpicks 'BARE' superwash w/nylon - natural colour. I seem to be hitting gauge (10 st/inch in stockinette) and Eunny says that the ribbing is quite forgiving sizewise.

I just finished the first toe to the point that I had to increase for the pattern and it looks pretty good. winding second skein because I want to get the second toe completed before I actually start the pattern portion.

I'm finding it difficult to believe I'm actually knitting with size 0 needles.
