War & Peace (and knitting)

kiwiknitter's picture

For those of you familiar with Tolstoy's book (and the movie), you'll know about Anna Makarovna's double socks. I was just given the pattern and I'm considering giving it a go. Before I make a start, I'm wondering if anyone here has tried knitting socks like this. I'm looking for advice before starting out.

Cheers, Jesse

Hi Jesse They’re

Hi Jesse

They’re interesting (and a challenge) to work but they come up very baggy because the tension (gauge) is so difficult to keep firm and tight. Give them a try but be prepared to be a tad disappointed. Gave up very early with these.

I wondered about keeping an even tension/gauge with this method. I'm not sure what I intend to do now. I might give it a go this summer when it's too hot to have a jumper's-worth of wool in my lap.

My knitting is totally tubular!

I just tried the doubleKnit

I just tried the doubleKnit cast on and failed miserably. I think I'm going to do the cheating method and cast on 12 sts. on one needle, 12 2nd color sts. on a 2nd needle then put all 24 alternately on one needle and go from there.

Ok, Jesse: I'm going down

Ok, Jesse:

I'm going down this dark path with ya. I printed out the tutorial I cited and it doesn't look bad. I'm going to start off with baby-sized socks as a sacrificial/practice project and I'll be using two different colors as the gal recommends to get the hang of it.

So, grab your weapons and meet me in the Lists!

oh WOE! They have been led

oh WOE!

They have been led into the shadowy depths, not of sockknitting alone, no, nay, never...but the hard core, doubleknitting doom of TWO SOCKS AT ONCE!!!

Now - combine this technique with the technique used for two socks on two circs - and you can knit both pairs (one of each colour) at the same time!!! think of it! FOUR SOCKS!!!!! All completed at once!

Jesse, You might want to

Jesse,

You might want to surf on over to:

She has a pretty good tutorial AND introductory story about the method. I've never done it 'cause I love the %based toe up method but I *may* have to try this. Maybe a set of booties for a start.

HTH!

This is where you knit two

This is where you knit two socks, at the same time, one inside the other?
