a "steek" is cutting your

a "steek" is cutting your knitting. It's often used to cut the front open for a zipper or button band, or slits to knit sleeves into.
The safest way is to machine or hand sew a line of stitching on each side of where you want to cut. The principal can be used to re-shape a shoulder, or take in the sides, or alter a neckline.
I'm teaching classes on exactly that at Madrona next spring.
