Shoulder Shaping Question

PaulKnittingNow's picture

Hi...time for another question re harrison vest pattern...

I am at the section where I am shaping the shoulders, and I keep ending up with six 'extra' stitches when i am completing the first side, reversing shaping...
Here is what it says:
(parenthesis my comments)

starting with 53 stitches, cast off 6 stitches, knit until there are 11 stitches on right needle, turn and leave remaining stitches on a stitch holder. (that's 36 st on stitch holder)

Work each side of neck separately. (So far, so good)
cast off 4 st. purl to end, cast off remaining 7 stitches (okay that takes care of the 11 stitches that were on the right needle)

(here's where the math trouble begins)

with RS facing, rejoin yarn to remaining stitches, cast off 19 stitches, K to end. (this leaves me with 17 stitches)
complete to match first side, reversing shapings.
so...back to casting off 4 st P to end, cast off remaining 7 stitches...(but that leaves me with 6 extra stitches!)

What am I not understanding?

I have included a pic of the intructions

That sounds right..I tend to

That sounds right..I tend to do short shaping on the shoulders....you can then join both sides with a three needle bind off which saves sewing them together....but you've probably done it by now. Hope it looks great!

Yep, you're right. I was just

Yep, you're right. I was just about to say that you didn't go back far enough in the shaping instructions. It's always a bit confusing when you have to do the shaping on the opposite side. Never hesitate to write it all out separately for yourself if you think it will help.

wait...wait...I think I have

wait...wait...I think I have it! when I "complete to match first side, reversing shapings." After I cast off 19 st and knit to end, when I turn the work I go back to the instructions where it says "cast off 6 stitches, but THIS TIME, I PURL off 6 stiches PURL to end, then KNIT off 4 stitches knit to end, then PURL off 7 remaining stitches.

Is that right?!?
