Simple Hat - Sock Yarn

ilhiker's picture

I thought I'd get acclimated to sock yarn finally. It is so delicate when compared to worsted and bulky weights. This is a stocking hat that my brother wanted me to make. It's nothing special, but it will fit his head closely which is what he wants. He is in southern CA, so he wanted lightweight. I thought this was a good opportunity to try my hand with sock weight. Maybe I'll get a pair of socks made yet!

The hat started out to look like this

Notice that there is no ribbing. It's actually tucked under and then joined in the back by knitting both layers together. My clumsy fingers couldn't get that right, and it called for a provisional cast on and that just wasn't going to happen with sock yarn. I don't like provisional cast ons anyway, so to fumble the first time with such thin yarn just complicated matters. So, my brother gets ribbing. Everything else is the same.

The first time I picked up

The first time I picked up sock yarn, I thought "I'll never be able to do anything with this THREAD." But, like everything else in knitting, it seems difficult at first, then you get used to it. Now I prefer that weight of yarn, it just seems easier to work with.
