My Very First, Completed Design

Buck Strong's picture

Well, I finally did it. My own design. I call it Tuscan Sunflower.

I have been beating my head against the wall on this one for about three months. The biggest challenge was getting the center motif to resemble spiraling sunflower seeds. The easiest way to have done this would have been to start with a star pattern in the middle. I didn't want that though. I wanted spirals from the beginning. Months down the road and many, many iterations later, I finally came up with what I wanted. I don't know how many times I started this guy and then ripped it out. I'm pretty sick of it now.
I started working it out using white sport weight yarn. Then when I was happy the center, I switched to fingering weight. Then, when I was satisfied how that knitted up, I went and got the good stuff.
The center is definitely not for the novice knitter. There are several double yarn overs as well as interesting things that happen on the plain rounds.
The petals didn't cause me much trouble. When I got to the final version, I didn't even have to rip them out once.
Now that it is finished, I should really get busy on that sweater that I promised my partner. However, I already have an idea for another circular shawl. This is totally MMario's fault.

That is AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL Buck!!! I LOVE it and I MUST knit it! As a fledgling pattern designer I can say I can't even imagine how much work designing lace is and I know I will NEVER attempt it myself! That's why I have friends like you and Mario. Congratulations! I'm so happy for you.

Three months for a first

Three months for a first design isn't bad at all.... I can't even BEGIN to tell you how many false starts I had with one design...and it looked like it SHOULD be so simple.....

(Nautilus - if you are wondering)

I'm looking forweard to more designs (me? an enabler? Whatever makes you say that?) and with your math background curves of various functions, etc....

Buck Strong's picture

Ugggh....I totally feel your

Ugggh....I totally feel your pain. The problem was trying to get the diamond pattern to grow. It seemed simple; it's used as filler for a ton of patterns out there. Well, now I know why it's used as filler because it sucks to use it as anything else.

What's that curve that is

What's that curve that is found in so many natural items? (such as a cross section of a nautilus shell?) - anyway - you would think knitting in the round, trying to make a SINGLE curve that approximates that wouldn't require huge leaps of mental gymnastics (it did......which may be my fault) but yegads.......

yup - there are a lot of patterns that are tough to make "grow" - or if you get them to grow the sections where they are growing look sucky.....

MMario's picture

BRAVO!!!!! I love it - and I

BRAVO!!!!!

I love it - and I also like the differing views you get in closeup and distance...makes it almost two patterns in one!
