Runner Design

DanInNJ's picture

I want to make a runner to go along the top of my upright piano. I want something that lays fairly flat so I can put picture frames on it and nothing too lacy. Looking for more of a masculine design. Was wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions for a pattern to use?

I would consider a simple overall pattern that is an easy repeat so you can just concentrate on relaxing as you work it...a runner long enough to drape over a piano is a lot more work than people expect. Sharon miller's "Heirloom Knitting" has some nice charts that are used for center fields in Shetland lace that may be helpful. Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

Hi Dan,
I'm not sure this would be flat enough, but I bring it up because while I was working on it, a lot of people said "Is that a runner?" I did a scarf with a seed stitch border and trinity stitch in the center. It's under my ravelry projects as "Tony's scarf" if you're interested in taking a look at it. My ravelry name is raycarlburg. Can't wait to see what you decide on!

Very nice! I really like the simplicity. Maybe if I did that with a lighter weight yarn it could work for what I'm looking for. Sure looks like a cozy scarf though!

How about approaching a

How about approaching a sideways-knit scarf idea, using a couple thinner stripes at the top and bottom to frame the main color?

For that matter, there are a lot of men's scarf patterns that you could modify to make a runner.
Knit/purl stitch patterns could work:

An all-over texture would make for a nice fabric:

here's one that looks like it's knit on the bias, for a brighter option:

If it were me in your shoes

If it were me in your shoes I'd double knit something. It's flat stockinette. Perfect for picture frames. The flatness and thickness give it a masculine heft. As for a design/colorway, whatever you like.
