Anti Spam Info

Helloooo Men!

I started using Mollom to cut down on our spam. It's currently monitoring nearly every text entry field on the web site!

Moderation and manually approving new users is catching most of the spam, but it's very time consuming to investigate each new user account. Technology to the rescue! I hope...

If it thinks you might be posting spam, it will ask you to complete a captcha – a type the letters that appear in the box type thing.

If it fails to catch a piece of spam and you notice it, feel free to click the "Report to Mollom" link under the piece of content and it'll get flagged.

Let me know if you run in to any trouble posting or experience any other weirdness on the site.

Thank you, gentlemen!

So far since I joined, it

So far since I joined, it has flagged every single one of my messages as possible spam. I do the math capcha when I try to post the message, then another math capcha and a visual one after it flags me as a spammer.

I run other boards, and I did a lot of discussion with other board ops on this issue. Capcha is always broken sooner or later by the spammers, it's a war of escalation. But if you make the board settings so that a new member is moderated for the first five posts or so then you catch virtually all the spammers and bots. Pretty much nobody is going to post five legitimate messages and then start spamming.

My boards are on PHPBB, and I know how to do it on there, but I'm not familiar with whatever software you are using. I've done this by hand on Yahoo, and it's a pain. PHPBB has a setting to automatically unmoderate members after five messages are approved. It's a bit of work for the moderator, but not as much of a burden as changing the status of new members by hand.

This has been exceedingly effective, especially when it's combined with a custom profile field designed to foil bot registrations. Remember the problem is not actually with spam messages, but first of all with spam registrations. If you can stop those, spam pretty much becomes a non-problem. I don't know how they do it with your software, but here's some information on what I did, and I have virtually no spam now.
