Does the "boyfriend sweater curse" apply to willie warmers?

WillyG's picture

I thought it would be fun to knit a Christmas willie warmer for a guy I've been seeing for a couple months. One might say that this fits under the category of "sock," particularly when one uses the alternate name for the warmer. As it turns out, my recipient told me the day after that he likes it. Since that time, I have been getting the increasing sense that I'm being avoided. What have your experiences been?

I've included a pic simply to be indulgent. I used the same yarn for my first willie warmer, and it made for a nice demonstration of changes in color pooling.

I worked one up on a winter's night for lack of anything better to do without a pattern and I made it a turtleneck! My partner had a hoot with it! ;o)

Oh my girlfriend neither

Oh my girlfriend neither cares nor is worried about it, it was not the first time, nor will it be the last. She is also not jealous that I don't spend ever waking moment with her, and actually have other friends that I like to see without her there. We are all dancer, and dancers don't have personal boundaries and when in public with any of my dancer friends, no matter the gender, people often thing we are dating/married. It was New Years, we were drinking, and it was also International Kiss Someone of the Same Gender Day (apparently) on facebook. I learned a long time ago in drama class, it is a lot easier just to kiss someone rather than pretend you are, so why not go ahead and do it. You might have fun, you might not, and in the end who really cares? It is not like his girl has caught us in bed together (well, doing anything other than sleeping that is) cause then I could see some reason for concern on her end. I just think she is upset that I looked better in drag at Halloween than she does on a daily basis, and I am one ugly looking woman. The only thing that makes me mad, other than the not being able to see him thing, is that now I don't have a gym buddy. I have never understood her on that part, I have four brothers, took PE in High School, share personal stories that make the sex ed prof blush, and I before this went to the gym often. It is not like I am going to see/learn something new.

Glad to know that your girlfriend is secure enough in your relationship not to be threatened. Too bad your friend isn't blessed with the same type of personality with his girlfriend. Very true comments as to the kissing and theater...luckily, what little bit of acting I did never gave rise to such quandaries. LOL -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

Apparently while on theater

Apparently while on theater trips at my high school, it was tradition to scare passing truck drivers by pretending to be making out with whomever you happened to be sitting with. They blanched when I asked them why they were just pretending. As for my girl, she says she doesn't really care what/whom I do, as long as I am safe and bring them home to share if they are really cute. I think she is joking...

Perhaps. However, at least she's willing to say what she thinks and feels. Always a good sign in a relationship. Even if she did just mean it as a joke. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

I am now working on

I am now working on boyfriend sweater number 3. The first turned out way too small despite checking the guage. I started the second in the same pattern and is so difficult I decided to swith to a third easy pattern which was supposed to be finished for Christmas - working on the fronts no (zippered vest). I am beginning to think that it may be too small as well, despite making the same one for my father who is a bigger man in XL size - the difference is all of 12 stiches all around. I am really beginning to believe in the curse so I knit him a hat for his stocking which it appears he will never wear.

I am not sure I would like to meet the guy who your WW would fit in a dark alley - definitely lights on for that one.

I am wondering if the BF feels he has something to live up to with a warmer that size?

You got it, Lorna's Laces,

You got it, Lorna's Laces, in Andersonville. A wonderful colorway for a guy, if I may say so. And yes, the size is rather large...I think in the knitting I guesstimated on the large side. He said as much when he saw it; on the other hand, he's not too small, either. To me, he is that big. I'd love to see how it fits exactly, to see how close I was. I feel that a willie warmer, while being an intimate garment, is also a light-hearted one, and I tried to present it as such. After all, it's not like a sweater that you can tell if the recipient is or is not using it.

Thanks for the well-wishing and the input; I'm not completely without hope yet, and a good conversation will hopefully help me get a better perspective on where he's at (and where I'm at, in some way). I eventually got a hold of him and we should have a better opportunity to talk tomorrow.

Color pooling and Lorna's

Color pooling and Lorna's Laces aside, has anyone else noticed the size of that ww? Looking at your hand in the lower left corner of the shot for perspective, OMG!!! Did you knit that to fit? I'm not a size queen (okay, I'm also not not a size queen), but holy cow!!!! Or are my expectations just lower than most? Maybe he's afraid it won't fit. Maybe you should be afraid it will. Maybe I should shut up.

Wow.

Seriously, though, beautiful work, nice yarn choice.

Wow.

The boyfriend sweater curse

The boyfriend sweater curse only applies to an actual sweater. Check out the wikipedia article on the sweater curse. It's rich. It says something about having him sign a "preknitual" agreement.
However, the idea of a willie warmer might be a little bit "out there" for some guys. Are y'all in early stages of the relationship?

Maybe on some level a non-knitter has an appreciation of the time and work involved in knitting a garment, and this suggests a level of commitment that may put a scare into a bf?

I guess it would all depend on the level of the relationship and how intense you feel it should be.

Remember...YOU'RE the one knitting...

...all he's gotta do is wear it.

:)

Good luck.

HaHa, I was going to say

HaHa, I was going to say something along the vein of "God, I hope not," but then I realized that the one person that I knit one for does no longer talk to me. That is because his girlfriend will not let him be alone with anyone, especially me. Apparently in her mind him and I while alone are doing things that neither of our girlfriends will be happy about, just because we kissed at New Years last year. Then again, it might be because of all the time we used to spend together. Apparently half an hour in a locker room is too much time "alone" together, even when it includes sauna time.

Also I had to laugh when I saw the pic, I right away though "Isn't that Lorna's Laces in Camo?"

Joe-in Wyoming's picture

Too bad that the girlfriends

Too bad that the girlfriends are a bit insecure about you kissing and having time alone. Here's hoping they get over it. Your friend, too, if he's unsure about the whole thing. After all, it is only a garment. However intimate. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.
