Thanks to everyone's input, I'm happy to announce that my dad's Christmas vest is beginning to take shape. By doubling the fine alpaca with a variegated sock yarn, I'm getting the best of both worlds...I get to knit on US size 5 needles (much more acceptable than 2's), I can incorporate some blue and grey (as per request), and it makes a firmer fabric. I'm very excited about being able to experiment with knitting from the top down, too. I stumbled upon the pattern book whilst coming up dry in the yarn shop and settling for a book instead. I'll save you the pain of all the details, but feel free to read more at my blog:

Looks GREAT!
...I'm a big fan of knitting with more than one strand of wool...plain yarn now seems "flat" to me...a strand of a variegated or textured yarn seems to liven things up...
Ja, I hear ya! I'm tempted
Ja, I hear ya! I'm tempted to add a thread or something to some plain worsted I bought a while back for a sweater.
