Lucy Neatby does something similar probably in here DVD series. shen she comes to the top of the shoulder where the front and back will be seamed, she knits several rows in a contrasting waste yarn then binds them off so she can graft the two together where the color changes. Unlike kitchener you're not having to remember when to drop stitches off the needles, once finished you unravel the waste yarn when you're sure you've made sure you have all the stitches grafted together.

A provisional bind off is simply to gather the stitches with a contrasting color of thread, much like using a stitch holder. It is really nothing more than running a needle and yarn through the stitches and picking them up later in the pattern. It's not a term used much in regular knitting, but it's referred to that way in loom and machine knitting. But it is the same thing.
