Knitting Club Funny

Buck Strong's picture

I totally, have to tell this story from knitting club yesterday. So, I was working with my boys on purling and this was the conversation as they were knitting away (Keep in mind these guys are 6th and 7th graders).

Drew: "Scott, if you could make napalm or a grenade which would you make?"

Scott: "Dude, I'd do dynamite."

Jesse: "What?" Dynamite over grenade?"

Me: "Totally grenade."

Drew: "Oh yeah."

Jesse: "You get cool fragments and stuff."

Me: "It would be so cool to go to like a melon patch and throw a grenade."

Boys: "Awesome, that would be so cool."

and the conversation continued about blowing things up. I'm so proud of them.
The lesson here is, even if they are knitting, boys will be boys.

Though I know squat about

Though I know squat about explosives and am a total pacifist, something about bits of melon flying in all different directions sounds rather entertaining. Especially if it's cantalope or honeydew; I can't stand those things.

Your story made me think

Your story made me think about something we did as kids. We lived in Corning, NY, which has hills on the south side of town. We decided what fun it would be to raid a pumpkin patch and roll the pumpkins down the street into traffic. Of course the downside was that it wasn't soon after that a policman was at our door. The group had been detected raiding the patch and turned in. The only person not seen was me, but my fellow "criminals" turned me in. Needless to say I got something from my father to remember the incident and also had to pay for the pumpkins.

So, what tickles me the most

So, what tickles me the most here is that there is still the little boy in us. It appears from the comments that many of us would still like to see a melon blown up. Actually, one of my boys came to me today to tell me about a local farm that has a Pumpkin Canon. I've totally got to track this down. Hmmm...knitting while watching the Pumpkin Canon go. That could make for a fun afternoon.

We make a pumpkin sling

We make a pumpkin sling every year and hurl the old pumpkins at the neighbours! Well.. in their field anyways. With thier permission and active help. We make a day of it, drinking beer, bonfire hotdogs..that kinda thing.

I'm disappointed that as a

I'm disappointed that as a faculty member and sponsor of this knitting club, you endorsed and thought it "cool" to take a grenade into someone's melon patch and destroy property and risk injurying oneself or others. Boys may be boys, but they don't need endorsement of explosive "play" by their group sponsor. You aren't one the boys. You are a role model. You crossed the line.

Boys will be boys indeed.

Why not do a knit/purl pattern and make little squares that look like the skin of a grenade and do it up for a sweater...make 'em do a big project...or a scarf or something..."The Grenade Scarf"

...hey, now that's an idea...

...and you're right...TOTALLY grenade!!! Dynamite is so...Wile E Coyote.
