I am a conservationist at heart and love textiles...I would save the life of an abandoned or ignored sweater before you bust the stash. But if you must, just measure around the laptop, use a gauge per inch that works, and go for it. Double knitting ( a tube on single needles) or a tube on circs goes quite fast. I could see swatches being made and put to good use.
