OMG! Ball Winder and Swift
Came home from the National Ed Association meeting to find that my swift and ball winder had arrived. I ordered all of this Cascade 220 for my sister's sweater and I took me forever to get the hank into a center-pull ball. So, being totally frustrated, I shelled out the money and bought the goods.
What the hell was I thinking waiting so long to get this! It's AMAZING! Five minutes and you have perfect center pull yarn. I was so excited; I ran down stairs and showed the BF. He wasn't as enthused as I was. Well, more fun for me.

Hmm. A cone winder. I hadn't heard of this/these. What's the advantage of cones compared with balls.
Two cones would be more to the point than two, uh, balls, I'd imagine. I once was presented with two cones. I didn't know what to do with them. It appears now that I missed . . . oh never mind. What're cones for? Dare I guess -- machines?

I've got both and - hold
I've got both and - hold your hats - never use them very often. I just take the time spent hand-winding my yarn as meditation time. Thinking about what the yarn will be used for...things like that. Otherwise, I ask the shop to make up the balls. Still, it is good to have the swift and winder when I want/need them. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

I made my own swift and I use it all the time, it was about $20 in materials including the wood stain. I got the hardware store to do most of the cuttings, but it is very easy to make.

Given that earlier that day
Given that earlier that day we had spend a couple of hours untangling a hank gone wrong, my partner was seriously impressed when he witnessed the first ball flying off the swift onto the winder. Dollars well spent!
One of the first knitting
One of the first knitting gifts I ever received was a swift and ball-winder, so I've always kind of taken them for granted. Every once in a while I'll decide to hand-wind a center-pull ball by holding the hank of yarn around my knees...yikes!!!...I can't imagine how Laura Ingles did it.

I have failed often enough (after the very first time) to recruit the roommate into the old fashioned holding it out with the arms, so, I just untwist the skein and hold it 'round my knees and sit in a rather impolite position -- and I've taken to making centre-pull balls wrapping them 'round an old wooden size 11.
Interesting visual and I don't know as if I can ever watch Little House On The Prarie again in the same way...worse yet, I'm not sure I'll get the loving imagery from reading the books either. I'm hereby permanently scarred.
