Great friend is getting married...

and I want to knit her a veil. She just got engaged about 36 hours ago and i came up with a great idea to knit her a fine lace shetland veil but I have no idea where to begin? Do you guys have any suggestions?

Not to be a naysayer, but

Not to be a naysayer, but have you mentioned the idea to her. I was going to knit something when my niece got married and her mother strongly suggested that a surprise in the wedding planning department might not be the best idea and that I should discuss ideas with my niece.

Although, she was extremely appreciative of the idea, she gently explained that such an item wouldn't fit in with her wedding plans. Apparently, many girls have every little detail decided long before it occurs to some nice gentleman to propose. In fact, for my niece, the identity of the actual groom was really secondary to all of the other plans, until she met her husband, of course. Then he became more important, but not important enough to actually have any effect on the wedding plans. He got plenty of input, just not any influence.

So, I gave her a more conventional gift - from the registry and now I'm making stuff for my soon to be grandniece or grandnephew. Really, I'm planning stuff, but color choices are waiting until I have more info. She can't refuse baby gifts!

I believe I saw a photo on Mario's Yahoo Group page where someone knit his QAL (Queen Anne's Lace) shawl pattern as a wedding veil. The photo shows the bride posing with the veil. Or am I losing my mind, Mario?

I just recieved Sharon

I just recieved Sharon Miller's "Queen Ring Lace" shawl pattern, it is quite confusing so I am just jumping in and going for it. She says it took her about 6 months to complete working 2 hours per night

My partner uses Sharon

My partner uses Sharon Miller's book regularly and complains about her pattern writing. He thinks she 'waffles' too much instead of giving precise directions.

Along with our own MMario's wonderful designs, another good resource is Sharon Miller's great book on Shetland lace. It may be tricky to find a copy but it has great tips on how lace comes together and helps you design your own. Great gift idea. -- Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

This sounds like a job for

This sounds like a job for Mmario. A Ravelry pattern search for lace veil would probably give you a host of options as well. A word of advice before you begin, tell her you want to do this and include her in the pattern and yarn selections. You don't want to invest time, effort and money in something that she won't want to wear, or worse begrudgingly wears. You want something that she will be thrilled to be wearing and she brags about to anyone who will listen.

I think both Queen Anne's

I think both Queen Anne's Lace and Spanish Armada have been knit as wedding veils. And then there is 'Wedding Peacock' which was designed to be used as one, or Pavo2 - which is a squared version....
