Grok is pronounced Guh Rock. It is supposed to be very gutteral, and the best human interpretation falls short of the Martian pronunciation.

It was coined by Robert Heinlein in his awesome classic sci-fi book 'Stranger in a Strange Land. The hero, or anti-hero, Valentine Michael Smith, used the term to mean understanding something. But it meant much more than mere understanding. It implied grasping the full content of being, as if one become one with the object. Then the object became one with the subject. That is "Groking the fullness of it".

If you have not read the book I would highly reccomend it! And sci-fi is not at all high on my reading list. I prefer older classics. Nevertheless it was one of the most moving and meaningful novels for me since I first read it in the late seventies. It used to be required college lit reading, as one of the finer examples of it's genre.
