Gauge Test

I need to do a gauge test for the sweater I want to make. The pattern calls for 3 colors, 2 rows each.
The gauge has the measurements in the pattern. Can I do the gauge test with just 1 color yarn, or should I do all 3?

The pattern uses the same

The pattern uses the same yarn for all 3 colors.
The pattern in simple
Rows 1 & 2 - Knit
Row 3 - *k1, s1 wyib
Row 4 - *k1,s1 wyif

And you change colors every 2 rows.

As long as the 3 colors are the same yarn, and you're doing full stripes (not fair isle) i would think a solid color stripe would suffice...

I would say you need to do

I would say you need to do some color swapping, simply because some tend to pull the floats tighter than others, across the back of the work, and this could affect the outcome on your gauge test. I know it sounds like a lot of trouble but it may be more accurate in the long run.
