I experimented on something I'd been wanting to try for a while. I was in the Peace Corps in the Central African Republic years ago. I've been wanting to make a skull cap inspired by the CAR flag (http://www.thelandmarker.com/Flags/Central_African_Republic_Flag.png.
I wanted to use cotton and to do it by stranding with two colors to get the vertical red stripe in. I used size 5 dpns and think I could've probably gone with size 7s or so. Then for the yellow star, I embroidered a little yellow daisy. If I try it again I might just knit stripes with one strand and embroider the red vertical stripe on top.

Yes, the red is stranded all
Yes, the red is stranded all the way around. What you don't see is that there are actually three red stripes. There are basically three "flags" going around. Three vertical red stripes and three yellow stars.
So you just stranded in
So you just stranded in between the three red vertical stripes, not all the way around just for one stripe, right?
I followed the link and it's a really interesting flag!
