Sock Summit Preparation

If at first you don't succeed...

Commit to airfare, hotel and summit admission and classes to knit something that you have yet to do successfully! Yeah!! Bring it on!

I am going to learn to knit socks... that fit... and that's all there is to it.

Three of my knitting buddies and I have made the commitment to be at the Sock Summit 2009 in Portland in August. So, I got a couple (well, actually... "a few" might be more accurate) hanks of Blue Moon's "Socks That Rock". My first pair, pictured here, are in medium weight, colorway "Basan" It reminds me of Autumnal Indian Corn. I am doing two at a time on two circs. I am following "David's Toe-Up Sock Cookbook" that I got online (and is linked in Ravelry if anyone is interested).

I went to Barnes & Noble and got each of us a spiral bound "journal" and then personalized each one with our Ravelry name and the Sock Summit logo. This way we can keep track of dates, yarns, needles, patterns, guage count and even color swatches, if we desire. Since the push is to learn as much as we can from local resources before we head off to Portland, this will be our "go to" record of all that we have accomplished.

Funny story: There are going

Funny story:

There are going to be 40 classes at the summit.

800 people applied to teach.

Oh, and no even though I live there, I am not going, but might have come meet up with some of you.

Sadly, even as late as Fri

Sadly, even as late as Fri March 13, no class schedule or prices have yet to be announced or posted. There is A LOT of speculation... given that there are some 3000+ people on the Sock Summit mailing list... frightening!

I am certainly hoping to meet up with some of the Men Who Knit crowd while I am in Portland!

I'll have to admit it looks

I'll have to admit it looks a little odd, both socks lying there with just the toes each knitted up. Not that my mind is in the gutter or anything.

I'd Feel Safe . . . . . . .

I'd Feel Safe . . . . . . . .

I'd feel safe with someone as organized as Thor as my nurse! I have wonderful intentions and I never loose a note (well, not permanently anyway) but the organization fairies have as yet to conquer my stacks of patterns.

Thank for the pattern suggestion Thor - and have fun at the summit for all of us who are can't make it

All the organization fairies

All the organization fairies do to my stacks is poop on them.... leaving their little mark so I know organization is possible but never staying long enough to make the possibility a reality....

:-)

Grace and peace,

Good luck with the Sock

Good luck with the Sock Summit. Hope you have a wonderful time. I like the idea of one notebook to take with you and devoted just to socks. I have my knitting journal (which needs updating) and the proverbial "little black book" that I carry around and make working notes in. (Which explains the update work.) One thing I greatly recommend is that you make fairly comprehensive notes as to what you do for shaping, gauge, yarn, needles, CO, Heel type, etc. I thought I was...until I had to go back to a sock pattern several other pairs later and couldn't figure out exactly what I wrote. Luckily, I had the socks in question and could go to them and recount (several times) to work out the pattern details. That pattern got updated immediately! Books, knitting, cats, fountain pens...Life is Good.

I am going to check out this

I am going to check out this book! I have knit many, many pairs, some more or less successfully but never toe up! This might be better than my way. I will give it a shot!

Best of all, it's a FREE

Best of all, it's a FREE download. Wouldn't really call it a "book" as much as the shell of a pattern, but it works for me!

So organized! I am always

So organized! I am always in awe of people who can be so...Best of luck in the sock learning experience.

With the best of

With the best of intentions...! I certainly hope that it works out as I hope and that I am able to keep the info as planned. In the long run, it would make it convenient as I would not have to knit guage swatches each time I repeat a yarn manufacturer/yarn weight.
