If this was knit in a heavier wool, could it be used a a lap blanket, such as the Brooklyn Tweed Hemlock Ring Blanket. I have wanted to try lace, but no one I know, would wear lace.

yup. most square or round

yup. most square or round shawls make great lapghans/throws.

I knit moose lace (this was sock yarn on 5mm needles - many lace knitters would have used a 4mm at the biggest with sock yarn) So you could use fingering or sport weight yarn with the 5mm and probably end up with about the same size (that's a queen sized bed it is on).

Or you could go for broke and use a worsted weight - still on the 5mm and the pattern would work; biut it probably would turn out larger.

That's lovely; it looks like I'll have to change my mind about using verigated yarn in a lace piece, it doesn't spoil the pattern. BTW, is this a round piece, or is it a rectangle/square for the bed?

It's round. And the pattern would be much more obvious if it were not variagated yarn. Believe me, it was a lucky coincidence that this worked this well. The less variagation the better it is for lace under normal circumstances. which is not to say you don't get happy matchups sometimes; but in general, almost solid or solid is best.

No, just a YO every row. (and a mite sloppy) I wish I had someplace to get a good photo of this. I'm rather proud of the design (though I've already got "improvements" in the queue).

The center is a shell, formed by a single spiral of yarnovers; the "chambers" are formed by more yarnovers worked vertically, and then the mesh background. figuring out how to get the single spiral and how to do the mesh while continueing the spiral in circular knitting was a bear!

It really does look like a nautilus shell; and yes, the variagated sock yarn worked out nicely for it!
