Regia Socks

While I'm waiting for my next jumper wools to arrive, I decided to knit a pair of socks. My tastes in socks are pretty basic - I don't need to do anything special for something hidden under my trousers. I still use the same pattern I used when I first learned.

These socks were knit in the Regia Design Line Landscape, “Canyon”. The colourway was designed by Kaffe Fassett and is gorgeous. I bought the wool from a MWK brother – Kiwi James. James has started a fine on-line sock wool boutique and it will be up and running very soon.

I used a 2.5 mm needle for the body and a 2 mm needle for the heel flap. I knit both socks at the same time on a pair of circular needs; it took 10 days to complete the pair. Believe me, do both at the same time on a pair of circ’s – no more single sock syndrome!

I’d not knit a pair of socks for 4 years but it all came back to me quickly. I first learned to knit because I wanted to knit a pair of argyle socks. I had learned the knitting basics, but had only knit a baby cardigan when I signed up for the class. The problem was that one had to be an experienced knitter to take the class. So, I quickly bought some knitting wool, a pattern for a man’s jumper and set to knitting it. After 2 weeks, I’d finished it just in time for the class. When I got to the class, I was certain I’d either end up sent to the remedial table or expelled from the class. I so took to knitting socks that I knit 2 pairs before anyone else in the class had finished one pair! I never did knit any argyle socks – to fussy to be bothered with. I like to knit socks, not only because they are practical but also because I feel connected to all the knitters in the past, especially those who knitted for soldiers in all the wars.

Nice socks. As with Albert

Nice socks. As with Albert doing something special with something hidden appeals to me. Socks allow me to be more colourful than I am in my outerwear, my hidden peacock display.

Basic socks are all you need

Basic socks are all you need if you have a gorgeous patterned yarn like that. Any patterning you would have in the socks would just fight with the yarn, and both end up lost in the other. You should have patterning in only one element of the combination for best results.

They look like they fit and are comfy, so that is all that matters!

Those socks are great! The colorway is amazing.
I love reflecting on the past while I knit. To think at one time it was something that had to be done to keep a family warm during the winter.

The socks are so gorgeous. I also like to knit them because, s you say they are useful and I can still remember knitting socks with the rest of my family during the winter evenings. I wear nothing but hand knit socks now and make sure I knit at least one pair every month.
