My first project

Greetings, all. My name's David. I am a new knitter and an even newer blogger. While searching the Interweb for help with this, my first project, I stumbled across MenWhoKnit and was astonished to find such an active and obviously welcoming community of male knitters out there, just a few keystrokes away. So excited I was to find your group, that I decided as soon as I finished this scarf, I would photograph it and write a post myself. This post marks a couple of proud firsts for me; my very first completed project (unless you count a stockinette, read curled up tube of knitting, scarf from twelve years ago) and my first blog posting ever. Forgive me if I ramble, and feel free to tell me to hush in future!

Now, a little about the scarf. A while ago, my Aunt Jan made a beautiful scarf for me out of this same pattern using Manos de Uruguay yarn. I was fascinated by the clean-cut complexity of it, but I never thought I'd attempt it myself. Later on, however, I decided to learn to knit again, and turned to my two knitting aunts, Jan and Kk, for help. As soon as I got knit and purl down, Jan handed me some cable needles and told me to have at it. With her patient help, I got stuck into working up a swatch of this pattern. I was hooked. As soon as I could, I rushed off to the nearest yarn shop, and bought a few balls of Eden Silk, "Orchid," and casted on. The end result, you see.

I made this scarf for my friend Molly who took a job in Rapid City a while back. Missing her and knowing she'd be in need of all manner of warmth-trapping gear, I chose to make my first piece of work for her. At the moment, the scarf is winding its way to her. I cannot wait for her to receive it, since I know it will be quite a surprise seeing as how she doesn't know I knit. Unfortunately, I may have to wait a while longer for the package to arrive on her doorstep. Rapid just got four feet of snow, and I gather everything's slowed down a bit as a result. At any rate, it's been a lot of fun working on this project: I have a odd feeling that the fun is just beginning!

For those of you still with me, thanks for reading. Please share any comments you may have. I'm eager to hear from you.

Regards.

It really looks great. The cable shift almost looks random (which I think would make it a very interesting scarf indeed)... do you have any photos of the scarf all stretched out so we can read the pattern on the garment? I can see that it's REALLY COOL in this picture, but I can't make out the pattern repeat. Incredible work for your first effort...cables are much very logical, I don't know why they intimidate people. This is great.

Thanks, everyone, for the

Thanks, everyone, for the very kind comments. I look forward to posting more soon, so stay tuned.

I really like the color.

I really like the color. What is the colorway? I am looking for a nice purple like that for a project for someone.
Nice work on the cabling. Isn't cabling fun?

Thanks, man! The cables

Thanks, man! The cables were a blast. The color is either Eden Silk lightweight "orchid 007" or "sky 07." It's hard to say for sure since both names are on the label??? I had this color in mind before I went to the shop and was really excited to actually find it on the shelves. How many yards do you need? I might know someone with about 300 yds to spare ;-)

Welcome! Wonderful first

Welcome! Wonderful first project. (Does anyone else except me feel a bit intimidated by the quality of "newbies" we seem to attract around here? They do some astonishing work!)
