Medallion Mitts Pattern From Knitting with Balls

asgalbraith's picture

I am working on the Medallion Mitts from the Knitting with Balls book. I finished the first mitt and the cable pattern is all twisted around the entire length of the mitt. I am wondering if I am reading the chart correctly.

It says that the chart is read from right to left, but I noticed that the number of the rows alternate from the right side to the left side. Do I knit the row from right to left on each row? or do I knit right to left, then left to right, right to left, and so on?

If anyone has made these mitts, I would appreciate some advice on reading the chart.

I'm making the Sandal Socks

I'm making the Sandal Socks from the same book and sorry to say, the directions contain errors and the charts are off, and I mean WAY off. It's almost like it was copied and pasted from some other pattern and not updated. Based on this pattern, it does not appear that the book had a very good proof read before going to press.

Yes, you want to go right to

Yes, you want to go right to left every round. I have made these and mine came out fine. are you doing the chart on the 2nd half of the mitt as well? If so then that might be the problem.

I know what the problem is

I know what the problem is now. The instructions in the book are wrong. The cast on is 40, but when I count the number of stitches in the directions there are only 39. So that is why the pattern spiraled around. I am halfway finished with the next mitt and the pattern is coming out perfect!
Thanks for the feedback!

They are knit in the round

They are knit in the round on double pointed needles. Then it makes sense that it would right to left on every row, rather than alternating right to left, left to right, and on.
Thanks!

which is not to say that the

which is not to say that the chart may not be for flat knitting but the pattern is in the round; I've seen that happen.

If the mitt is knit flat,

If the mitt is knit flat, you would read the chart right to left on 1st row, left to right on the2nd row, etc.

Are they knit in the round

Are they knit in the round or back and forth? If in the round, then the chart is right to left every row; if flat then alternate rows would be left to right. usually.
