Okay: I'm totally into mittens now. I have a pattern that calls for a "Thumb Gusset." What is this creature?

I'd describe a thumb gusset

I'd describe a thumb gusset thusly:

Picture working along on the tube that will be your cuff. As you get to the base of the thumb, you realize that the base of the thumb pushes out sideways at an angle and wider even than the palm. The gusset is the angled part that will go around the base of the thumb and act as a foundation for the tube of the thumb when you knit that it

You know that skin between your thumb and first finger that sort of rounds out what would be an "L" shape?

A thumb gusset is the knitted equivalent of that.

it's the extra material that

it's the extra material that allows for the difference in sizing between the section of hand with the thumb and the size of the hand with only the 4 fingers. sorta like the extra stitches on a sock that allow for the heel to fit better; or the extra stitched uner the arms of a sweater to allow freedom of movement.
