Almost all the women in my family knit or crochet. My maternal grandfather was a furniture builder but during the great depression when he was out of work he used to do tatting. I am a frantic Type A personality that must be going or doing something every waking minute of the day. I started to crochet about 20 years ago and found that I could really relax while "sitting and stitching". I want to learn to knit because I like the kinds of projects and textures that knitting provides. tHere seems to be such positive energy from the men on this site. what a welcome change.

Welcom to MWK!
there are ways to more or less reproduce tatted designs in crochet - not sure if anyone has ever figured out how to knit that distinctive type pattern - or if it is even possible without horrendous joinings.

Tatting: my grandma used to do that, too. It's on my list of things to learn. I just love the lace edgings you can produce with it.

Tatting is very easy - there is really only one stitch to learn (it's a larks head knot from boy scouts) formed using a shuttle, the 'picot' loops are formed by allowing space between stitches, and linear (non ring) tatting is done with two shuttles, but uses the same stitch. The major craft stores have books and supplies. For learning it is easier use a crochet cotton thread in size 10, and not the finer 'tatting' threads.
Good luck, and ask if you have questions
