my first chart

I think I understand this chart but someone tell me if I'm wrong. Row 1 - *k2, p1,k1 repeat from * to last stitch k1, Row 2 - k1, *p3, k1 repeat from * to end of row. Some how this doesn't seem like it's going to end up like the pattern shown. Right now I'm just doing a swatch to see if Cascade 220 will guage out right. I've never had to read a chart before so any help would be appreciated.

Well that's the most magical

Well that's the most magical rib pattern I've ever worked - nothing looks right for 4 or 5 rows and then all of a sudden there it is - I love knitting. Well I ended up doing one swatch with #8s (too small) and one in 9s which after I let it rest overnight guaged out just right. Thank you all for your help, I can't wait to get started.

I recently started

I recently started experimenting with Knit Visualizer, which is a charting softwear for knitters. It is very well done and obviously was written by (or in VERY close consulation with) knitters. Maybe programs like this will help to standardize charting symbols, layout, formatting, etc.

BTW, that's a very nice sweater pattern, Scottly (and the model's not bad either!

I made that vest when the

I made that vest when the pattern originally appeared in Knitters Magazine and yes the chart is confusing. But a gauge swatch is a good way to work out the kinks and understand the pattern stitch.

I often have to cover the face of the model to decide if I really like the sweater or just the model who is wearing it. LOL

charts are very ,very, VERY,

charts are very ,very, VERY, *VERY*, *V*E*R*Y* non-standard.

you'll even run across some in which you READ from left to right for all rows, and/or from top row down, even though "standard" is right to left for RS and lowest row first.

MMario - ambiguity is cultivated, it doesn't happen in a vacuum!

I believe the first row is a

I believe the first row is a right (public) side row and the second is wrong side. So :Row 1 - *k2, p1,k1 repeat from * to last stitch k1, Row 2 - p1, *k3, p1 repeat from * to end of row. Hope this helps.
