Today I visited a LYS in Ocala and bought a 1 pound ball of sport weight alpaca yarn in a dark charcoal gray color. It was rather pricey in my opinion and I haven't the slightest idea what to make with it. Any suggestions?
That's a pretty good price for a lb cone of alpaca!

I thought it was cool that she had one pounders of alpaca. She had several of them but only one of each color. From what she said she doesn't sell a lot of it.
Oh Jeez...you got a great bargain. Working in a LYS, I deal with sticker shock alot (especially when pricing yarn). But you did GOOD...that's an excellent price. What about a hat, scarf and glove set for yourself...you'd do good with that too... Altho a vest would be very tempting. Beautiful yarn.
This one from MagKnits calls for a slightly smaller gauge than the one from Lion Brand, but that may not be a problem. The recommended yarn isn't called a sportweight, but it's a cotton and the recommended gauge seems to put it in the sportweight category.
I tried searching Ravelry, but there's 3100 projects tagged with "vest" so I'll leave that to you to look there. :)
I'll have to check out some patterns to see if there's enough to make a vest. There's no yardage on the ball, just the weight. As it's a pound of sport weight alpaca I'm guessing there's somewhere around 1200 yards there give or take a bit.
It looks beautiful Mason and if it helps you have 10x50gram balls there so you should have enough for a vest. You do a lot of 'giving away' work so this time be nice to yourself and keep whatever you make! Whatever you make it will feel gorgeous to wear.

I found a couple that might work. This one from Lion Brand specifically calls for sportweight yarn and calls for a gauge of 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1". http://www.lionbrand.com/printablePatterns/kwes-vest.pdf
