not knowing what the pattern is like, this may be useless advice.

Try casting on a "sampler" in a thicker yarn - just one or two repeats of the lace, and knit on that for a bit to learn the pattern. THEN go to your project yarn.

of course I'm starting with a much too complicated project.
...it seems to be three patterns.
...an end pattern...a transition section...then the main body of the stole.
...and all this for a knitter who isn't comfortable with yarn overs, yet...

Yarnovers are easy - just do a knit stitch without inserting the needle into the stitch. Yarnovers are "air" stitches....

MMario - ambiguity is cultivated, it doesn't happen in a vacuum!

but I get confused...sometimes it's followed by a knit stitch...sometimes a purl...and that throws me!

Doesn't matter what it comes

Doesn't matter what it comes after or what it comes before if you always just make the yarnover itself as if making a knit without inserting the needle. Just do each stitch seperately, making sure the working yarn is in the appropriate posiition for that stitch before you make the stitch.

if you just purled, return the yarn to "knit" position, make the yarnover by *NOT* inserting your needle, wrapping , now,
followed by a purl? move the yarn to the purl position *leaving the YO in place (you wouldn't remove a knit stitch if it were followed by a purl, would you?) MMario - ambiguity is cultivated, it doesn't happen in a vacuum!

yup - I rmember that pattern

yup - I rmember that pattern - as I recall it gives you a really good workout on different decreases. and changing stitch count, etc. But yours looks good!
