This semester's knit bronze sculpture.

I knit a sheet of cotton fabric on the ISM and cast in bronze.

Also made the base by casting crochet.

Metal casting wasn't an

Metal casting wasn't an immediate enough process for me when I was in University but now I regret not pursuing it. Finally it was the spruing that did me in - I just didn't have the patience for it. So I really appreciate what you've done here. It's a great piece. I'm assuming that this is just not a decorative piece either - I would love to hear about it's content if you feel like expounding.

Your work is incredible. I'm so glad you share it. My daughter saw it and was so taken with it that she got some idea about turning a knit panel into canvas and painting on it. if she follows through with it, I'll post.

Thanks guys!

Here's the way bronze casting works (quick version):

The knit fabric sheet is dipped in wax and allowed to cool. Once cool it is cut in square & folded like Cosmo said. A ceramic mold is built around the positive, and then put in a furnace at high heat until the positive burns out. This is why they call it lost wax casting. The empty mold is filled with molten bronze. Once cool, the mold is destroyed, leaving the bronze casting in it's place - after a lot of cleanup work.

It was a lot of work (took most of the semester), but it was very worth it.

I just showed this to a bunch of my knitting friends at our knitting circle and they were totally blown away. Absolutely amazing and beautiful!

And it's just a square you folded up, right?
