Hey Folks,

I'm new to the group. I started knitting about a year ago. I just finished my first pair of socks. The first sock came out like Frankenstein-type creation that I have dubbed Franken-bootie. But I learned a lot and the second sock (aka son of Franken-bootie) came out looking good.

Welcome, and not to make fun, but I laughed at your comment about your sock being the Franken-bootie and the son of franken-bootie. I laughed because my first pair were rather large also. After washing them in the washer and then putting them in the dryer they fit a bit better. Any way thanks for the laugh.

I'm glad you liked my post. A friend of mine suggested I use some felting to reduce the size of Franken-bootie. With my luck, I'd just end up with the Incredible Shrinking Fraken-bootie. I'll just wear my over-sized creation with pride instead!

Well you could always put it

Well you could always put it on your foot, fill the tub with hot water and walk around the bathtub that would ensure you dont' shrink it too much to wear it :) I like Franken-Bootie. And it's always kind of nice to have something around to remind you of where started from.

Welcome to MWK. I've only been here a week and I've already learned a ton. Socks are my next mountain to climb so thanks for being brave enough to show us your first attempt - I'll do the same to keep your Frankensock company :). By the way I like the yarn you used what is it and what size needles did you use?

I used a wool and angora

I used a wool and angora blend by Debbie Bliss on size 8 needles (I use double pointed). I don't know if you will be learning to knit socks from a book/pattern or a person. I learned from a book and I kept thinking "That can't be right!?" when it came to turning the work around as part of the making the heel. But that is what you do! I enjoyed making the socks, they are fairly quick (particularly with chunky yarn and larger needles). Although even with a better gauge, these socks are too thick to wear with shoes. They are more to wear around the house on cold days. Good luck!

Thanks! That looks like a happy cat. I've got two at home and one in particular loves to play with the string as I knit. It is both cute and annoying at the same time.

Welcome to MWK - I think the Franken-bootie is trying to tell you to knit a pair of felted clogs or slippers...

MMario - ambiguity is cultivated, it doesn't happen in a vacuum!

Thanks for the welcom. I don't think I'm going to venture into felting, but my general idea is oversized slipper-socks, so I'm glad they kind of look like that! ;-)

Both Franken-booties look comfy, and will no doubt keep the toes nice and toasty during the chilly weather.

I won't even tell ya what my first pair of socks looked like...nope...not gonna tell...but...I will say that you did a far better job on your first pair.

Sockys are a bit tricky to learn, but the results are still warm and comfy. And better too big, than too small.

Much improved on the second sock :) But I have to say, maybe I'm a little crazy (yeah, yeah I know, a little?) But I kinda like Franken-bootie. Welcome to the group, I caution you to beware the MENablers, the force is strong in this bunch.
