Purling through the back

Purling through the back loop (whether it's single or a double stitch) is awkward, no matter how you look at it.

You basically have to insert your right needle, from BEHIND the left needle, knitwise into the stitch, in other words from left to right. Think of a normal knit stitch. You insert your right needle into the stitch on the left needle from left to right, only you do it with the right needle in FRONT of the left needle. In a purl through the back loop, you still insert the needle from left to right, but from the back.

Then you catch the yarn (which is being held in the front, as in a regular purl stitch) and pull it through the stitch to the back.

I usually find it easier to tilt the left needle so that the point is pointing more toward my chest. I can the get the right needle into the back loop a little more easily.
