Baby Blankets

Hello all,
A friend of mine is expecting a baby and I wanted to knit a baby blanket for the new soon to be addition. However, pricey yarn is always an issue when when living on a budget.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good, baby safe yarn, that would be not too expensive. Of course the yarns that most of the blankets I've seen thus far have been really expensive, beautiful of course, but wowzers.

Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.
Cheers,
Wally

I just bought acrylic for a

I just bought acrylic for a blanket-Bernat Softee Baby for $3.49. I'm a fiber snob, and although the mother will be impressed with natural fibers at the beginning, in the long run it's the washing that will be the issue. I'm planning on doing the acrylic blanket and a couple of hats, and then a fine wool blanket and hat. Another alternative are blends. I actually found a wool/acrylic blend that you can not only machine wash, but also put in the dryer. It's nice to have the very fine knitted gift for special occasions, but I want to knit something for everyday use as well. I've also found that some of the new acrylic yarn is very soft and has a nice drape. Good luck!

I used a generic baby yarn

I used a generic baby yarn by Carron for the changing blanket in the post before yours. It's washable, soft, and easy to work with and VERY affordable. Red Heart also makes giant skeins of baby yarn that are very popular for baby blankets. Make sure you post a pic of the finished object....
