Men with Balls

greenmanmknz's picture

Last evening I was at my local knit shop for the friday evening knit group. After rewinding some of the yarn I was buying I came up to put the yarn into my bag by the front table and one of the women there said, "Oh, let me feel your balls". She was referring to the fact that only the shop owner can get really tightly wound balls from that winder thing. Her next statement was, 'See, his are fluffy and loose like mine". by that time the rest of us were just about on the floor laughing and she had turned fire engine red, but then joined in the laughing. That sure broke the work-a-week tension and got the weekend off to a great start.

As I write this the 'Knitting With Balls...' book is the picture showing over the Shout Box and reminded me of that.

I was always taught you

I was always taught you didn't WANT to have tight wound ; and have to admit I prefer the looser wind.

I don't wind my balls tight

I don't wind my balls tight because it stretches the yarn, besides, light fluffy balls are much more fun to play with.

Exactly - tightly wound yarn

Exactly - tightly wound yarn is 'stressed' and it relaxes after you knit it causing shape changes. This has been reported as the big factor in failure to obtain gauge in a fitted garment. The keep-it-loose factor is also why the spindle in the middle of the ball winder is so fat - so that the yarn can relax in the ball before you knit with it.
