braided cable hat

ChrisN15720's picture

first hat of my own design. the cables are different sizes, though it doesn't show too well in the picture. i'm not sure if i like the color combination, what do ya'll think? a friend asked for the pattern (martin webster, to be exact), so i wrote it out. if anyone would like the pattern feel free to ask. i'd be happy for anyone to use it.  i dunno if anyone would want to make it or wear it... but it's here just in case, haha. oh, and thanks to martin for giving me the courage to even post it!

Oh, yeah, and my birthday isn't until September...so you'll have plenty of time over the summer...I'd like mine in a nice off white sort of fisherman's knit sort of color with the little specks of grey in it???

Nice hat.

You did a great job.  The

You did a great job.  The cable stands out and the color combination enhances that.  Hats are fun to make and provide a way to experiment with color, texture, improvisation with the yarn.  In fact, come July I will be back in Maine teaching a scrap hat workshop where we use our odds and ends around the house to make hats.  It is something I do from time to time.  I tend to give away more of my knitted hats than anything else I create.

Also, I would love the pattern.  It would be fun to make - particularly for my nephews.

The hat looks great, Chris!

The hat looks great, Chris! I like the color combination, too. You must be a modest guy to need more courage to post the pic because it's truly excellent work.

Chris, The hat is wonderful!

Chris, The hat is wonderful! I was wondering, though, what it looks when viewing from the top. I see you've changed the color up there. How did you work the pattern into the center?

i didn't continue with the cable pattern for decreasing. at the top of the hat i switched back to the first color and then K2P2 ribbing, i knitted for several rows, then K2 P1 ribbing, then K1 P1 ribbing. the hat is 126 sts around and i ended up with 15 or so in the end. i'll take a picture of the top of the hat and post it. i can also send you the pattern if you'd like, haha.

A great hat Chris! The

A great hat Chris! The colours gives the hat a modern look I think. Youngsters who snowboard in Sweden would love it. Male snowboarders in Sweden often knit their own hats, is it the same in US?

I don't know if US

I don't know if US snowboarders knit for themselves, but I do remember a Scandanavian poster for Addi knitting needles that was in a local US yarn shop a couple of years ago.  Maybe others have seen it.  It was of three teenage boys, outfitted for snowboarding, sitting in perhaps a bus station, all three knitting their own hats.  It was a very catchy poster and the shop displayed it in their front window.  I remember reading a brief interview with the boys in which they explained that they had learned to knit in school and now knitted hats to sell to other snowboarder youths.  I always wondered if more of this style advertising might help to bring more males to knitting and change social attitudes.  Did anyone else see this poster?  I wish I had a copy.

In Sweden male snowboarders

In Sweden male snowboarders have made it very popular to knit and crochet thier own hats. A lot of teenage snowboarders think it's absolutly neccessery to knit their hats and craftclasses are full of teenager who wants to learn to knit and crochet. But I really think it's limited to hats.

i'm not much of a snowborder

i'm not much of a snowborder or a skiier, so i'm not positive if teen snowborders would knit their own hats here, but i would seriously doubt it. Knitting hasn't quite caught on with the younger crowd yet, but teens are starting to take more of an interest.

Chris,  I think the hat is

Chris,  I think the hat is great!  I like the cable pattern and it looks like the reduction at the crown of the head is perfect.  I would love to have the pattern.  I've been giving serious consideration to giving a go at designing some of my own knitted items and you've given me more inspiration here.  As for the colours, what the heck!  I think that with hats and scarves, unlike perhaps with jerseys, we have lots of latitude with our choices of colours and the combinations thereof.  Well done and thanks for sharing!  Jesse
