The first time I made socks I followed a tutorial created by a woman with the screen name Silver. It is incredibly detailed and takes you step-by-step through the process. I still keep the tutorial on my computer to refer to occasionally. She has tutorials available for tradition cuff-down on dpns, for toe up, etc.
Stickywarp mentioned the percentage based toe up version and after doing about 25 pairs of socks last year, it is by far the easiest. When you go toe up, you can divide the skein into two equal balls. They you do the magic cast on which is I believe on knitty. Its amazingly simple once you get the hang of it. Then you do the increases for the toe, then the foot, then you do a short row heel, you don't have a heel flap and don't have to do the gusset. I did almost all of mine in garter heel. Its quick and very easy, and then you knit the leg. You stop when you are about to run out of yarn. The other sock will be exactly the same size, because you split the skein into two equal halves at first. I use an electronic scale and measure it to the gram. Believe me, I did a lot both ways, and toe up is the only way to go.

You do realize that that all the sock knitting addicts are going to encourage you while we warn you about how addictive it is. Plus I was one of those who thought sock knitting was insane until I knit a pair. Surprisingly I don't have a pair on my needles, but I'm trying to finish WIPs.
Anywho... I am a big fan of Ann Budd's Basic Sock PAttern in "The Knitters Handy Book of Patterns". I like it because it is adaptable to any size, gauge and yarn weight. Can't ask for more than that.
Thanks! I am only working on my fifth thing ever and have lots of plans and ideas but think I need stuff for myself too...ya know what I mean? Something to reinforce the knitting.
Tucker, I have to agree with PeterMark -- sock knitting is QUITE addictive. I'm on my third pair in less than 2 weeks. Here's a pattern I'm trying out right now. I like it because it's FREE, it's a well-written pattern, it uses inexpensive Patton's Classic Wool (2 skeins), it can easily be adapted/modified with another stitch pattern or color way, the socks are sturdy and very warm, the pattern incorporates a simple slip stitch pattern on the heel flap (for added wear and strength), and the socks will be a delight to wear.
It's from CanadianLiving.com and the article is entitled: "A simple knitted sock pattern for beginners". This is the best written, easiest to follow sock pattern I've found (outside of the Vintage Minerva sock pattern from 1936) and I think it would be ideal for a beginner. It calls for 4mm DP needles and there is no American equivalent. If you have access to metric needles great! US 6 is 4.25mm. If not, I dropped down to US 5 (3.75mm) and have had a good result/proper gauge.
Of course, I'm going have to try PeterMark's pattern next, as soon as I finish the Knit Picks boot socks on two circular needles that will be my 4th pair, LOL. A "universal sock pattern"! WOW! Right up my alley....
Good luck and keep us posted!

Here's the first sock
Here's the first sock pattern I first tried I heard about it on MWK:
http://www.burninghand.org/sockpattern.html
I also found a pattern inside of the label of Lion Brand Magic Stripes pretty easy to follow as well.
Turn back while you still can. Knitting socks is addicting.
Good luck. See you at the 12-step meeting!
