Really Ugly Hat

MasonM's picture

Ok, this is my first attempt at stranding. No pattern, just a practice piece I made up as I went along just to learn the technique. Yeah, it's really ugly, but hey, it's practice and I did learn a lot.

I know what you mean about

I know what you mean about being our own worse critic. However, I have to tell you that there are hundreds of thousands of knitters who have knitted for years but who don't have the courage to try stranded knitting - but, you've mastered it after knitting for just one year of knitting (no, we have not forgotten your first scarf!). I admire your sense of design and creativity in this beanie and from what I can see you achieved what is almost impossible for a beginning stranded knitter: even stitches with no puckers ! Great work! I hope to see more colour work from you!

Thanks Kiwi. It was fun to

Thanks Kiwi. It was fun to do and I am already designing the next one, I just have to find the time to go buy the yarn. :D

If this is your first

If this is your first attempt at designing, then keep going. We are always our own worst critics, but I think you did really well with this.

Thanks. I did get a couple

Thanks. I did get a couple of comments on it while knitting at the truckstop coffee counter this morning.

Great Colors and nice design. I am glad you are getting into new waters, it seems to be fun!

Thanks Andy. Learning and

Thanks Andy. Learning and trying new stuff is half the fun of knitting for me.

I think it came out great

I think it came out great Mason, I'm never thrilled with my first attempts at anything, if I'm really unhappy with it, I ritualistically burn it.

LOL Thanks. I don't think I could bring myself to burn something I made. Frog yes, burn no.

well I only did this once,

well I only did this once, and if you had seen it you probably would have agreed, it was acrylic so it basically melted. But still looked better than the actual Hat I tried to knit.

If you're not happy with it

If you're not happy with it - then you're not happy with it. Any thing in particular that bugs you? because from the pictures it really isn't bad - patterning or knitting.

MMario - ambiguity is cultivated, it doesn't happen in a vacuum!

Thanks, I just messed up in

Thanks, I just messed up in several places and things aren't exactly as I had meant them to be. Ah well, we're our own worse critics I guess.

You're nuts!! It's

You're nuts!! It's beautiful!! If you did this without a pattern then you are a natural talent. I love it! Please produce more "ugly" designs like this. The knitting itself is also impressive- no puckering, which is no mean feat even for a more experienced knitter. What is the stitch you used on the brim?

MasonM's picture

Thanks for the flowers, but

Thanks for the flowers, but I am seriously not happy with how it turned out. But then it was just a practice piece. I did learn a lot doing it.

The brim is just a garter stitch border I started with to keep the stockinette from curling.

From where I am sitting I

From where I am sitting I see a design that is reminiscent of things I have seen on Mayan temples and in other cultures. I love the definition of the motif, clear and unabiguous. Try this, it works for me: put this hat away, out of sight for a month- forget it exists- then take a look at it again with fresh eyes; I think you'll find your opinion changed.

MasonM's picture

Thanks Albert. Funny you

Thanks Albert. Funny you mention the Mayan thing because that is kind of what I was thinking when I knit it. I was watching a show on PBS about some archeological digs in Central America for the first hour or so that I was working on it. Although not anything close to the same thing it was kind of an influence.
