My So Called Knitalong

Celowin's picture

I finished my knitalong scarf yesterday, blocked it overnight, and just took pictures to share.

I put a 3 stitch garter stitch border around the main pattern. I liked how the border looked before blocking, but stretching it brought out some undesirable features. If you look at the closeup photo, it appears there are eyelets between the main pattern and the border. If it occurred on both sides I would like the effect, but since it only occurs on the one side the scarf seems unbalanced.

I should have increased/decreased during the garter stitch on the two ends, as there is very noticable flair out. I don't personally mind it, but I know it is considered "wrong." Similarly, there is definite bias to the pattern, which seems to go diagonally across rather than straight. Even if it is not the way the original pattern was intended, I like the way my eyes get lost in it.

I don't have much else to share other than the technical details...

Yarn: Knitpicks "Wool of the Andes Bulky Hand Dye" in color "Spumoni." (2 balls)
Needles: US #11 straight, bamboo
Final Length: 5'9" after blocking
Project Started: 9/17/07
Project Bound Off: 9/21/07

Looks great. One quick

Looks great. One quick question, is blocking a scarf typical? It never occurred to me to block a scarf.

I was taught to block

I was taught to block everything that I knit, if for no other reason than you don't want it to change shape from expected the first time you wash it. In this case, more than that, I wanted to block it to a longer length. Before I blocked it, the scarf was way too short... barely over four feet. Even now it is a bit shorter than I like, but it is at least acceptable.

It wasn't a dumb question at all. I wasn't intending to block my first scarf, but then I had it explained to me how important it was. To some extent I'm still not convinced (after all, this one looked better before blocking), but I'm in the habit of blocking everything and so I run with it.

Beautiful scarf. I also like

Beautiful scarf. I also like the yarn. I've used it to knit a hat. The coloring is great and the yarn feels nice (in my opinion.) Great job!

I'd never wear this scarf,

I'd never wear this scarf, as it is completely not my style. I'm planning on using it as a Christmas gift for one of my sisters. (I don't know if it will match her style either, but there is at least a chance...)
